Hi
Guys
I have been reading posts on this board for
a while now and all the good reports I have read about
chipping has got me interested.
I was just
wondering if there are any South Africans that chipped
their A3/S3? Any info ,advantages, disadvantages etc.
would be appreciated.
I am considering going to
Chiplogic
Great Board
guys.

Heya
Joe,
Definitely an SA boytjie here man, but I
drive an S3 so no comments forthcoming from me about A3
chipping...
Have spoken to a couple of guys who
have done it though and the general consensus is BE
CAREFUL! There's apparently only one place in SA which
can do a proper job, and that's Sportech in Jo'ies, the
rest seem to offer a Superchip kind of
alternative.
I haven't heard many good things
about either mind you, so if I was going to chip my car
I'd ship it over to Amd in the UK and have a proper job
done...
Lekker man, see you around the
board!

Hiya
Joe,
I have had my A3 1.8T chip remapped by
Sportech. The difference compared to freinds A3's is
quite vast, however I also have some other mods (bigger
intercooler, exhaust new plumbing). I haven't had any
problems yet except for a little backfire when the
engine is cold and I change to second (but dont know if
this is due to the chip). The take of is a lot quicker
(haven't measured 0-100 though) than standard A3's and I
get much smoother power curves at high revs. A recent
dyno reading gave me 105 kw at the wheels (on the reef
with our shitty octane fuel) i will test it in Durban
next time I am there though..should be much more
impressive. The guy who tested my car said the Audi club
A3's were only getting around 85 kw on the
wheels....
If I were to do it again though I
would probably have the ECU sent to Germany or the
UK..they have been doing it a lot longer and seem to be
more professional. In SA i guess your choices are
Chiplogic (heard good things about them) or Sportech.
Hope that helps.

Hi
guys
Thanx for all the replys.
I actually
wanted to buy an S3 in Feb or March but then the rand
situation made me reconsider. So my options are
Sportech,Chiplogics or to get it done in Europe or
Germany.
I won't feel comfortable getting it done
abroad coz if something goes wrong it's gonna be
difficult to get it sorted out. I will check out
Chiplogics and Sportech, but if they are not up to the
job ,then I guess I will have to forget about the chip

Hello,
Ja, there's a guy who posts in the
S6 forum and he had a Chiplogic re-mapping done, it
sounds like this option is really just a new set of
software which is added to the existing chip, (not a
total ECU re-flash in the sense) and the car has to
learn the way you drive etc. after this has been
done.
Apparently the change is pretty
good...
Cheers,

Hi
guys
I read Andre's reports on his Chiplogic
chip. Sounds very promising.I also got alot of help
from a guy in Natal called Thierry. He was one of the
first guys to put a Chiplogic chip in an A3 and he is
very happy. So things are starting to point towards
Chiplogic. I will go and see Chiplogic in February an
then decide. If I do get the chip then I will post a full
report on my impressions here.

Good
to see u joined the forum Thierry. I think it's a
good idea to start an Audi-Sport SA group.
I
have seen that the UK and the Aussie guys (and gals) get
together once in a while and post the pics of their
meets here.
But I am not to sure if there are too
many SA boyjies on this board. So far it's u,me,Jabba
and GreenDemon.Oh and Andre (advh) at the S6 forum
who has really posted some terrific reports on this
board and his site. Are there any others ...

Hey
okes,
I'm keen man, I know of one other SA guy
who is also a fundi, Stuart (posts here every now and
then...) and he's always saying how we should stop by if
we're ever in Knysna just to talk about cars etc. and I
reckon a club would go down well here.
I've
started noticing that all the okes driving S3's look
like real prisses (in CPT anyway) so it would be good to
get in touch with people who are real gearheads, surely
lots of fun to be had.
I've been checking out the
chiplogic site and it's sounds like a pretty tight
operation, 190kx on the wheels for an S3 isn't too
shabby, have you contacted Chiplogic for prices at all
Joe?
It definitely sounds like a nice clean
alternative. I'm glad Andre decided to post his views,
they certainly
help.

Hi
Guys
Stuart from Knysna, South Africa.
Had
my A3T chipped (MTM)at Sportech AND at Chiplogic
MTH). Chip, Kingdragon panel filter and 57mm exhaust
all done by Chad at S-T. Could not meet the promised
130kW at the wheels, so I wanted out, but eventually
settled on a compromise of an MTH by OB at Chiplogic ,
who took the time to sort it, achieving 129.6kW
(310.9Nm) compared to Chad's 127.5kW
(313.7Nm).
This was on 98 octane shipped up from
the coast, but when I checked the exhaust (Wildcat kak)
back home, I discovered that it was literally a piece of
shit. It had one section folded inward on a bend,
reducing it to sub-50mm, explaining the problems they
were having on the dyno. I eventually designed my own
mandrel bend 63mm stainless exhaust, which significantly
reduced otherwise noticable turbo lag and made a big
performance difference to top end of the rev range
.
Down at the coast, it would ping quite audibly
on steep ascent if I did not change down on accelerating
uphill, but according to MTM, who I contacted in Germany
whilst arguing over performance targets with Sportech,
they were experiencing major detonation on testing the
vehicle, a problem which was largely cured by a slightly
higher octane fuel and much tuning of the MTH chip by OB
at Chiplogic.
I eventually sold the A3T minus
the 63mm exhaust, H&R drop springs and roof and boot
spoilers and side-skirts (silver), so if anyone is
interested, I will e-mail pics and prices - makes a
really nice visual package, which is all Sportech can do
well. The drop springs are an absolute must
priority.
I now have a 2001 S3, which I am
planning a lot more carefully, including
water-injection, so well done Thierry, way to go - great
octane-booster and coolant for our hot climate (please
provide details to director@gaiaresearch.co.za). Please
address enquiries for A3T parts to same).
I like
the idea of an A3/S3 club page - have tons of pics and
tech to share - so who does what? Anyone caught speeding
in SA? I was bust at 201km/h in a 100km/h zone, slowing
down to turn into my driveway. Very lucky to get off
with a R1500 fine. I now run a Laser Echo for laser
traps, useless against gatso though.
Nice to see
my compatriots active. Maybe we can look at group buys
in future.
Thierry, please detail your
experience with the Aquamist system and your other
mods.
Joe, definitely Chiplogic if not a DIY. OB
knows his stuff. Upsolute folded here. Abt have
arrived.
Jabba, what you done to your S3, and
what is planned?
Greendemon, you appear to have
been ripped of. My car did 106.4kW at the wheels
standard on reef fuel with 200kms on the clock. Contact
me and let me know what you think you had done and what
you were charged for the thought. I would like to
help.
Nice to have met you
all.
Love
Stuart

guys
Whoops? Crossed my Newton meter outputs.
Should read: Chiplogic achieving 129.6kW (313.7Nm)
compared to Sportech's 127.5kW
(310.9Nm).

Hi,
I think the idea of an A3/S3 club in
SA is brilliant. I am no gearhead but now that I have
such a great car I am definitely trying to learn all
that I can about it, and from what I have been reading
there seem to be some very knowledgeable people in SA.
Stuart, thanks for the reality check, I though
that the kw's were pretty good on my car but obviously
they aren't I would really appreciate some help trying to
figure out whats been done to it...pity you are in
Knysna though it is a bit of a drive from JHB. I think i
will take it to Chiplogic to have it checked out as
everyone seems to be in agreement that he is the best
around.
I did the new plumbing (Aluminium piping
and silicone bends - Topsport Developments) after I
bought the car, but the other work (Chip, exhaust,
styling) had been done by the previous owner. Will let
you know what OB has to say after I take it to
Chiplogic.
So how do we organise this club..any
ideas Does
any one from SA have web development skills...maybe a
page would be a good place to start.

Hi
Guys
Don't worry GreenDemon , I don't know too
much technical stuff about cars myself, but this
forum has really got me interested.
Stuart ,
when u say ABT has arrived ,do u mean that they have
setup workshops in SA I don't know if it's necessary to start an
A3/S3 Club. I think we should just be the
Audi-Sport.net South Africa Group. We can communicate
through this board and if we have enough guys we can
start doing group buys etc.
But I do think a
local website is a good idea. I am currently doing
some work for MWeb, so I have some friends that could
help put together a very nice site for us.Does anyone
else want to get involved with ideas or helping build
the site or should I just go ahead and get some pages
built for everyone to take a look at.
Jabba I
am very jealous of the guys in Cape Town, u must have
so much fun on all the great twisty roads with great
scenery their in CT

Hi
Thierry
I have already started getting prices for
hosting the A3/S3 site.
I can get prices for u if
u are looking to set up a personal website for
yourself. If all u want is a site about your beast then
why not make it part of the A3/S3 site.

Dear
Greendemon
A3 1.8T's are factory rated at 110kW
at the wheels on 95 octane fuel at the coast and
probably average 105 on the reef on 93 octane. It would
therefore appear that you are running largely stock,
with the other mods not making an appreciable
difference. The normally aspirated A3's run 92kW on 95
octane at the coast, and probably average 85kW on 93
octane at the reef, so the guy who tested your car is
also confused.
What may have happened, is that
your battery may have run flat, or been disconnected, or
a fuse popped and replaced, or some such power break to
the chip, resetting it to the standard parameters. These
chips do this. They need to be reset with the
VAG-com(puter)in such an eventuality. OB may or may not
have the ready means to reset you, seeing as you have a
different chip. With time, he could probably sort
it.
You may however find that they did f---all
hoping that the modified exhaust note would lead you to
believe that you were really cooking. Placebo is
powerful. Deny it at our peril.
Let me know if I
can be of
help.
Regards
Stuart
