KYALAMI RACE TRACK
HIGH PERFORMANCE ADVANCED DRIVING COURSE
AND TRACK DAY
09 November 2003
With 25 Audi Club members participating, 5 participant from Audi FourWays and a fair number of visitors, this event proved to be even better attended than the similar day we had at Zwartkops. It must be remembered that bookings were full within a few hours of this course being announced to the Audi Club members
By 9.00, all, except one who shall remain nameless, had coffees and registered. Thereafter we had a comprehensive lecture from Jake of the Four Rings Academy, which lasted for +/- 1 hour.
After the lecture we all went out in groups of three with an assigned instructors for a few laps around Kyalami, with the Academy cars, A4 1.8T's and one S3. This is a far more technical and somewhat more challenging track than Zwartkops and thus needing more concentration and better driving skills, which our instructors made sure we would eventually get.
After everyone was able to get a few laps under the belt, we moved on to some demonstrations of braking, dry and wet, lane change and braking with and without ESP, as well as practice braking under wet with lane change and fast lane change with ESP, as I am sure no one wanted to end up like that A4 below, which did the fast lane change purposely without ESP, which was part of the demonstrations. No it was not one of the members having fun...
By 1.00 pm we all went to lunch, which was included in the cost of the course. The food was very nice, with plenty to satisfy the hunger and required refurbishment of lost proteins and calories of the participants. There were nice desserts too.
After lunch, each person who wished to do so went on the track with his or her own car. At all times the number of cars on the track was limited so to avoid too much traffic, however the faster drivers/cars had inevitably to overtake from time to time. Here the participants were able to put to practice with their own cars what they had learned in the morning with the Four Rings Academy cars. This lasted until about 4.00 pm, at which time all were pretty tired.
All participants were given a certificate each, from the Four Rings Academy confirming their successful participation to the High Performance Course, which by the way, will, from most insurance companies, entitle you to a discount on your car insurance premium. Also, those who have participated to this course, will automatically be allowed to go on the track, without having to take another course, unless they want to, at future similar events.
From what I gathered from the various members I talked to, all were extremely happy with the day, as well as to be able to improve their driving skills.
Many thanks to all at the Four Rings Academy, and a very special thank you to Audi Fourways for generously sponsoring this event, which, and it should be known, was a much as three times more expensive than the day at Zwartkops, even though it cost the members the same entry fee.
The pictures were taken by myself (still trying to get the hang of my new digital camera, which does not prove as good as my analogue camera for action pictures) and Willem van Thiel - Thanks.
