KYALAMI KART CIRCUIT
and
DINNER AT FAT ARNIES
03 July 2004
When we first announced the Audi Club wanted to organise a Kart day at the Kyalami Kart circuit, from the e-mails we received from members, we should have been at least 40.
When it was time to make the final booking and for the participants to confirm and pay, about 50% cancelled. We even had a cancellation from someone who had paid, and of course requested a refund, a couple of days before the event, as well as some members simply not showing up.... Frankly this is very disappointing.
Nevertheless, who ever came had a lot of fun.
We divided the participants into three groups; Group 1: the Light Weights (up to 75kg), Group 2: the Mid Weights (76 to 85 kg) and Group 3: the Heavy Weights (+ 85 kg).
Before it all started, there was a lecture, where the participants were told a few rules, as well as the meaning of the various different flags.
Each group had a 10 minutes practice session and then a 10 lap race. The winners of group 1 and 2 also raced with Group 3, however with an handicap of +/- a quarter of a lap.
Unfortunately, as it was quite late, I could not take many pictures of the third group, due to not having enough light. Individual race & practice pictures are right at the bottom of this page.
There was some serious racing between the participants, specially in Group 2, where a bunch of drivers, from the third down, had excellent scraps with the lead (within that bunch) changing many times. Quite a few participants spun their Karts, but all safe and sound. In fact, unless you do something totally stupid, these Karts are very safe, even if you spun them or come off the track.
There were some problems with the transponders and the computer which recorded the laps. The results below are the best we could make out of it, but seem to be fairly accurate.

Afterwards, some of the participants went to the Fat Arnies restaurant in the Kyalami Business Centre, where again all had a good time, even with arguably mediocre food.
Many thanks to Audi Centre East Rand Mall for their sponsorship, Andrew Stevens for organising the sponsorship, Ryan Tholet for organising this event and Alan Sofer for organising the Dinner at Fat Arnies.
