Charity Run - Abraham Kriel Children's Home - 22nd November 2009

Car clubs are generally associated with events that involve high speed, driving skill or well maintained and loved vehicles. With this in mind, the Audi Club of South Africa Committee decided to change this perception within their club to people who love a brand, but also are committed to charitable values.

2009 has been an economic disaster for numerous people, and as importantly, associations that have relied on public funding to support those in need. With this as the backdrop, the Committee approached the Abraham Kriel Childcare Centre in Langlaagte to determine if they could help with any of their 120 children’s needs. As it turned out, the Centre was busy considering replacing the pillows the children used, and so the idea for a Charity Event was born.

The committee approached its member base for donations, found a supplier of linen, and set about purchasing 120 pillows for the centre. Due to the overwhelming response from the Club members, they were able to raise enough funds for 120 pillows and pillow cases, as well as a cash donation to the centre.

The Club organized a convoy from Midrand to deliver the pillows to the children on the 22nd November 2009, and the members and respective other halves that joined on the day were welcomed with open arms by the children and the Centre’s PR manager. The Club members were treated to coffee and drinks, a tour of one of the campus’ homes, and the pleasure of handing out the pillows to the children. While car club events are usually loud and joyous occasions, this was a humbling event for many members, and created a resolve that the Audi Club is not only unique in its approach to its events it organizes, but also to the way it interacts with the society around it.

For 2010 the Club is considering how to build on this amazing achievement, and will be calling upon its members to support worthwhile causes like the Abraham Kriel Childcare Centre.
